Forthcoming Go Books
This page is intended to collect all the rumors that I've heard
about forthcoming go books. It also lists books that have been
published but that I haven't bought yet. If I have the
publication status of a book listed incorrectly, please let me
know.
I try only to include rumors that I've heard from a reasonably
reliable source, but I certainly won't guarantee that everything
here is correct. In particular, I don't usually check to see if
old information is still correct.
I've just started to list dates when I've updated items here; if
an item doesn't have a date, you can assume that it's from
before December 2000.
- Kiseido has a web page
that mentions a book called Japanese Prints and the
World of Go by William Pinckard, edited by Richard
Bozulich. It says "The essays in this catalogue are based on
an unfinished manuscript by William Pinckard. Just before his
untimely death in 1989, Pinckard asked [Richard Bozulich] to
arrange for the publication of his essays as well as the
prints in his collection." The book has yet to appear, but it
does seem that significant work is being done on it, so
perhaps it will appear soon. (Dec. 2001)
- The next (last?) book in the Get Strong at
Go series will be on Ko, the last I heard.
- All reprints listed here are done in partnership with Schaak en Go winkel Het Paard; the latter
has been very kind about providing me with information about
these reprints.
- The second volume of the Power
Builder series is out. There should be a third volume
eventually. (May 2004)
- Galactic Go is, I
believed, planned to eventually reach four volumes.
- Forthcoming books listed in their latest book are:
Komoku Josei and volume 2 of Intermediate Level Power
Builder. (Updated December 2000)
- They have signed a contract with Baduk Seodang, the biggest
Korean publisher of go books.
- Other books in the Masters of Go series (which starts
with Essential Joseki, by Rui
Naiwei) include Mystery of the Opening, by
Ma XiaoXun; Middle-Game Techniques; by Cao DaYuan
and Yang Hui, and Guide to the Endgame, by Yang
JinHua and Wang Qun, all of which Yutopian plans to publish.
- They have published Winning a Won
Game, by Go Seigen. This is the second volume
of a three-book series; the first volume, called
Applying Joseki, will be published eventually.
- They are planning to publish translations of two Chinese go
classics, Xuan Xuan QiJin and Plum Flower
Spring.
- They apparently have no plans to public the remaining two
volumes of Igo
Hatsuyo-ron. (December 2004)
- Volume V is finally out. (May 2004)
- The Learn to Play Go series will run to nine
volumes; the last three volumes are going to largely consist
of full-board problems. I don't know what the sixth volume
will be about. (January 2001)
- Janice Kim is working on a three-volume series of more
advanced books, one volume each on the opening, middle game,
and end game. The text of the books is basically written, but
they don't have diagrams yet. (January 2001)
- Books that have been published that I haven't yet
reviewed: Yilun Yang's Go Puzzles Volume 2: Life and
Death in Chinese Characters; The Best
Play, by Feng Yun; Let's Play Go, by
Yasutoshi Yasuda; Punishing and Correcting Joseki
Mistakes, by Mingjiu Jiang and Adam Miller; 200
Tesuji Problems, by Shirae Haruhiko. (May 2004.)
- Contrary to prior reports, they haven't yet published
400 Years of Go in Japan, by Andrew Grant, and
it's not clear when it will appear (if ever). (See this discussion
on Sensei's library.) According to one correspondent,
it was actually briefly published but then withdrawn from
publication. (December 2004)
- Forthcoming books: How Strong Are You? Whole-Board
Problems Tests, by Haruyama Isamu. (December 2002)
- They are distributing a book on Cosmic Go by
Takemiya that is being produced by a French company. It's
available in French;
an English translation has been planned, but is currently on
indefinite hold.
- They are planning to produce some books written by top
European players. Matthew
Macfayden's web page indicates that he's the author of
one of them. It's on aspects of the middle game; he hopes
that it will be done by the middle of 2000.
- They are partners with Kiseido in the
reprinting of older books, so they are also involved in some
of the rumors listed above. (In fact, they're the ones who
have provided lots of the Kiseido information.)
- Wings Go Club has
published Sabaki: How to Manage Weak Stones, by
Yang Yilun. (March 2003)
- Charles Matthews and Seong-June Kim have basically finished
Shape Up!; they don't have a firm publisher yet.
They're working on a second book, called Side
Ways. See Charles' web page
for more info. (Dec. 2002)
- The Wings Across Calm Water Go Club, who is the publisher of
How to Destroy and
Preserve, has made How to Play Against
Stronger Players - Volume 1: Local Positions
available from their web site.
When the second volume (illustrative games) is done, which is
planned by the end of the year, they're thinking of making a
printed copy of the two parts in one volume. They also have a
book of Go Seigen stuff available, though they don't seem to
have the appropriate copyright permissions for the latter.
(June 2001)
- According to Phil Straus, we shouldn't hold our breath
waiting for more volumes of Whole Board Thinking in
Joseki: the authors are currently too busy with
other projects. (December 2000)
- Robert Jasiek is planning 3 or so joseki books, of which 1.5
are ready as a draft; Bill Spight is working on a revision and
translation of the Nihon Kiin's Small Yose
Dictionary. (Both according to rec.games.go, as of
December 2000)
