The Breakthrough to Shodan, by Miyamoto Naoki.
Ishi G19; 1976.
This book is designed for people who are in the strong kyus,
helping them reach shodan. Most of the book is presented in the
framework of looking at three- or four-stone handicap games, and
showing how black can win by avoiding complications and playing
thick moves. There are problems at the end of each chapter, plus
two chapters at the end on life and death and tesuji. I thought
that it did a good job of presenting moves that I could easily
have made and showing why they were wrong; I'm not the only person
who likes this book.
This book is currently out of print.
Lukas Biewald (eggroll, 3k* IGS) says:
A 6-dan told me that this book should be called
Breakthrough to Professional Shodan.
